Welcome: from Peter Garelja, Principal of Tikipunga High School, stressing his support of careers advisors and their valuable role within the school

Guests:

Ken Kawati (Dept of Labour) spoke on

  • future labour markets

  • move towards Dept of Labour improving workplace practice not compliance

  • Northland unemployment risen to 4.1%

  • Smaller workforce than in the past for Northland

  • Lower number of youth and people in their twenties staying in Northland

  • Annual in-depth report available that focuses on youth employment

  • Labour market forum to bring a new type of expo to Northland. Looking for people to serve on the steering group. Model to be similar to “Get a Life Waikato”

Grace Ikiua (TEC) lead discussion on “schoolsPlus”.  General discussion on downturn of the economy and implications for our students

Jenny McPeak (Regent Training) presentation:

  • Importance of enrolling ‘students at risk’ in tertiary early

  • Invitation to bring groups of students through RTC

  • Opportunities at RTC

General Business:

Reimbursement for Debra Millar - flights to CATE Executive Meeting Cheque $436.00

Social event for this year:

Suggestion that groups of members travel together and meet in Mid-North after senior students have gone on Study Leave and share a meal.

Usefulness of a work broker for Whangarei’s Gateway Schools Discussion email coming

Call for suggestions for activities at future meetings, reminder that NorthCATE funds may be

used to pay for guest speakers
