Waikato Regional Report July 2008

Waikato report to National Executive, July 08 - Jane Thomas

Membership has remained similar from last year with reasonable turnout at meetings. Our meetings are still held after school once a term as this meets most people’s needs. We also meet up at Career Services days and tertiary providers update days regularly. Increasingly, members are contacting me when they need support or questions answered which is really good.

Our Term Two meeting was held at Hillcrest High school where they have an impressive Careers and Transition suite. We discussed the School Plus policy with many schools making submissions to the Ministry about this.

Our meeting this term will be hosted by the Waikato School Support Services staff where we will be discussing Schools Plus, CPABL and STAR. We are also joining with our local CPANZ branch for another meeting in bringing Heather Carpenter up to talk about her latest work and new book.

Waikato also held it’s inaugural Careers month in May. Unfortunately, Waikato CATE was not asked to be on the organizing committee of this, and I expressed my dismay at this to the organising committee. While not really wanting another job for myself, I would have been appreciative of the chance to have a say. The month went very well but was very tertiary driven by the University and WINTEC. We hope that it improves next year.
