Waiariki Regional Report July 08
Waiariki currently has 39 financial members. At our AGM in April, we elected a new treasurer, Barbara Stewart, as Lynn Randall has moved to the sunny climes of Kerikeri. Lynn had been our treasurer since the creation of our region and we wish her well. Unfortunately, our Regional representative on National Executive, Fletcher Tabuteau, has resigned from the position owing to pressure of work. We thank Fletcher for his contribution and will elect a new representative at our next meeting.
Members were pleased with the invitation to attend AUT’s Regional Careers Advisors’ Update Day in May. Unfortunately, it clashed with Waiariki Institute of Technology’s Youth Pathways Day and CPaBL training and no one present was able to attend. Hopefully the dates will be kinder in future. Sheryl did go and was very impressed with the organisation and the programmes she saw while there.
Also on the professional development front, it was decided that current Waiariki members could apply for a $200 grant towards their PD again this year. The assistance was welcomed by many of us last year, most putting it towards the costs of travelling to Conference in Invercargill.
Coming up is a Careers Fast Track one-week workshop in Rotorua this September. For those still to complete their Careers qualifications this is an attractive proposition.
May was Careers Month in Rotorua and members were kept busy with all the events on offer. One very successful activity was the Workplace visits, where local businesses offered “places” at their businesses for a day. Over 140 placements were available and, despite a few hiccups, the feedback has been very positive.
A new website has been developed for those people/organizations who work with and for youth in Rotorua. It has a calendar of events, notice board, resources, forum and Youth Service Directory. People can register as groups or individuals then contribute information or comment to the site. The on line Directory will replace the current hard copy. It is intended that each organization will maintain its own data and keep it relevant. It is hoped this will enable greater networking opportunities for the Youth Sector. With the District Council and Ministry of Youth support, the sector is also meeting every 2 months at a networking breakfast.
At our June meeting, our invited guest was Graham Marshall the Project Manager for the Schools Plus project, speaking about the progress of this initiative. He distributed copies of his powerpoint presentation but was happy to stray from that when members wanted to discuss particular aspects. We were fortunate to have him share some of the initial feedback from the consultation meetings around the country. This was not yet publicly available, so we were very grateful.
