Present: Louise MacFarlane (WCC), Russell Booth (Career Change), James Bruce (HNHS), Judith Lander (HGHS), Rosemary Fleischl (Sacred Heart), Adie Graham (Massey), Robin Penman and Lynda (Taradale),

Apologies:  Judy Waapu, Cindy Morgan, Sue Ross, Carlo Ngeerngere, Di Strawbridge, Marilyn Love, Hilda Overeem, Nicki Dowling, Skip, Del Whyte

HBCATE warmly welcomes Louise to her new role as Careers Adviser at WCC.  Congratulations Louise and please feel free to ask any of us for assistance or advice.

Future Intech:

Jenny Dee has a range of graduates who are available to talk to school groups

2 of these ambassadors spoke to us at the meeting confirming that these young people would be fantastic to present in schools.  This could be useful from a careers dept perspective or via subject areas in their specific areas of expertise.

Thanks to Rachel  and Brett for their time and input into the meeting.

Links with local councils:

Rebekah and Rachelle has similar roles at the respective councils.

They are the LINK person for anything to do with YOUTH so can be the link for work experience/gateway or STAR placements

A Youth Services Directory is being printed currently.  A copy will be sent to each school but if you do not get access to this, extra copies can be purchased for $5.  It is a joint initiative and will be very useful

Thanks Rebekah for making time for us in a very busy week

Jamie and Kylee from WINZ:

WINZ have some work entry skill programmes that could be available to specific students still at school.  Each programme has a specific industry focus with real prospects for work opportunities.

A process is currently being worked out to facilitate this – the aim is ensure that it attracts suitable students and a safety net is provided for those who participate.

1.  Election of Officers

The region is of the size where it would be useful to have a committee, or at least a team of people who are prepared to take responsibility for different functions of the group:

  • Chairperson
  • Secretary
  • Treasurer
  • Events and speaker organiser(s)?
  • Manager - local calendar of events?
  • Regional National Executive Representative – It would be great if someone else could come to Exec meetings sometimes to see what happens.
  • Rep on Careers Expo committee?

Members were asked to consider whether they are able to contribute in any of these ways.  If you have any particular interest here, or simply are happy to assist in some ways, please let Adie know.  To begin with, 2 things would be really appreciated:

  1. Someone to take responsibility for managing a ‘calendar of events’ within the region to avoid 3 meetings in one week like we had last week.
  2. One school group who is willing to do most of the preparation for the next meeting – there is a budget available and already some agenda items.

It was suggested at the meeting that perhaps a few of these functions could be done by an admin person with skills and a little time and that the branch funds could pay an ‘Honourarium’ for the services.  If anyone knows of (or is) such a person, PLEASE let us know.

2.  Financial Position

Prior to the Mark Watson workshop financial traffic, the HBCATE account had funds of $1521.82 for regional use.  This is a healthy amount and there should be more from the Mark Watson event.  The regional members need to think about how they want this money spent and what priorities we have for this.  Ideas to date include:

  • Cost of Adie’s conference fee (I have to pay this personally this year even though I am a presenter!) – passed Russell/Judith
  • Cost of a member joining Adie at an exec meeting once each year?
  • Expenses of speakers and events

3.  Branch Events 2008
How many meetings?  Those present felt that 2 a year were sufficient given our other involvements and that the email info system works well.  Perhaps we should look to attach any other meetings to an existing event?
When is best to hold them?
Who could take responsibility for planning and hosting one? (Can be a group)
Who will check that this does not clash with other Careers/Transition events?

4.  National Exec Meeting
Adie was unable to attend the Exec meeting in April but the attached summary should be helpful about current happenings nationally.  Schools Plus is something we all need to be informed about as the impact on our work is great.  Submissions due 31 May – we ALL should respond and not be restricted to the format they impose.  www.schoolsplus.govt.nz

5.  Conference Update
Link is now live from CATE website.  The following message is from Tess on the organising committee:

We have had feedback from a few people that they have experienced difficulty registering for conference online.  Our initial investigations suggest that this may have something to do with the different firewall settings used in schools.  We are continuing to look into this from our end.  However if you do have members who have had difficulty please encourage them to print out the registration brochure and return this by fax or mail and our event organiser will enter their details and send them a confirmation.  They will not miss out on conference accommodation discounts if they do this.

Don’t leave it too late to register!  Members suggested that some shared transport to conference could be a fun and cost effective idea.  The concept of a ‘road trip’ sounded like fun!

6. Links with Careers Expo
Currently Cindy Morgan is the only CA from secondary schools that is working with the Careers Expo committee.  Jan Crawford (Careers Services and Expo Committee) would like to see a stronger link with the committee and CATE.  In other regions (eg Auckland) the link is very strong.  Jan will talk more about this at our next meeting but encourages us to think about the idea and perhaps there are members who would be keen to make this their contribution.
