Regional report to CATE AGM November 08

By Jane Thomas

Waikato Branch has had another busy year!

Our Term One AGM and meeting was hosted by Dairy NZ and we enjoyed presentations from people involved in the Dairying, Meat and Wool and Horticulture industries, as well as a lovely light meal. Our officeholders remained the same as previous years.

Term Two meeting was held at Hillcrest High School's impressive new Careers and Transition centre. No guest speakers were available so a general discussion on STAR, Gateway and Careers issues was held.

Our Term Three meeting was hosted by the University of Waikato School Support Services in Hamilton. We had a guest speaker, David Trought from FITEC, speaking to us about careers in the Forestry sector. Saskia Osborne also updated us with a report from the ACER conference that she attended in Australia. This meeting was held on the day that Schools Plus was officially announced and launched so this was also a subject for discussion!

WINTEC hosted us for our Term Four meeting which has few members turn up as we chose an evening when half of the Waikato was having their senior prizegivings! WINTEC have some exciting new opportunities opening up for school students and it was good to see what was available to us. Their new student hub is also looking impressive!

Time and lack of it continue to be major hurdles for Waikato CATE members in their jobs and we are working hard with our schools to improve our positions in our schools.
