CATE Conference 2020

We have chosen the theme ‘He Tangata‘ for 2020. The whakatauki we are all familiar with:
He aha te mea nui o te ao? What is the most important thing in the world?
He Tangata, He Tangata, He Tangata. It is the people, it is the people, it is the people.

In our endeavours to help transition people to tertiary education, employment or apprenticeships and training we are often focussed on skills shortages, technological advancement, changes in the vocational pathways and funding, when we really need to pay particular attention to the individuals we help, their aspirations, personalities, skills, their whakapapa and their place in the world. It is important to offer opportunities to them and consider future developments, but the people and their hauora or well-being are the centre of our conference. Our logo shows the inter-connectedness of the mountains and rivers, and the communicative stance of three people.

Our city, Ōtautahi Christchurch, is a city re-emerging, one that is re-inventing itself and it is the people who have designed and constructed the new buildings, initiated urban regeneration, opened up a booming hospitality scene, laid out new laneways, pathways, street art and retail spaces. It is the people who have created business, industry and educational opportunities. It is the people who have connected with each other in times of crisis, have helped those in need and they are ready to share their stories.

The conference will be held in the new Christchurch Convention Centre, Te Pae, which opens in 2020 and is in the centre of town on the banks of Ōtākaro, the Avon River. This will be a world class convention centre and is an architectural gem. One meaning of Te Pae is ‘gathering place’, another is ‘horizon’. When we gather together and look towards the opportunities and the future for the people we influence, we will also be able to appreciate the city of parks, rivers, beaches and hills, a city waiting to be explored again. Our ever resilient and innovative people are ready to welcome you and our Canterbury CATE Conference team are excited to host you.
