Gateway

Gateway is a work experience programme designed for senior students, predominately years 12 and 13. The programme provides students with opportunities to gain real-world experience while still at school. It is designed to help students experience potential career pathways, develop practical skills, and make informed decisions about their future careers.

Participants are placed in workplaces related to their area of interest to allow them to experience the day-to-day operations of a particular industry or profession. The work placement is usually one day a week and can range from several weeks to several months.

Students can achieve credits in generic unit standards that develop employability skills as well as industry-specific unit standards.

Gateway Funding

Gateway funding enables secondary schools to give senior students access to structured workplace learning integrated with school-based learning. Students’ learning is assessed in the workplace and they can achieve credits on the New Zealand Qualifications Framework (NZQF) towards their National Certificate of Educational Achievement (NCEA).

Gateway is designed to support school students’ transition into the workforce by offering them workplace learning while at secondary school. This should include a formal agreement (like an individualised learning plan) between the school, the student and the workplace.

Gateway Handbook

The Gateway programme provides an opportunity for secondary school students to experience different pathway options before they embark on further education and training or employment. All state secondary, state-integrated secondary, and partnership schools/kura hourua with students in year 11 and above are eligible to apply for Gateway funding.

Gateway Learning Plan & Resources

The individual learning plan clarifies both the work-based and school-based unit standards of the learner’s Gateway programme, and can be aligned with one of the six Vocational Pathways. Here is an example of a Gateway Learning Plan Template, this can be modified to suit the needs of your students. It is suggested that a learning plan includes the following information as outlined below. Additional details and information can be added.

Unit Standard Providers

Students in the Gateway programme work towards credits, and these are achieved through generic employability unit standards and industry-specific unit standards.

Programmes of work are individual and are based on student interests and requirements of industry.
